Grinding to Nano: Insights from the Secondment at Zoz GmbH

CLiCAM ERA Talents Dr. Pavel Gejdoš and Dr. Serhii Tkachenko share the details of their ongoing secondment at Zoz GmbH company in the city of Wenden, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. During the initial phase of their secondment, owing to kind support from the Zoz company Managing Director Katharina Zoz, Prof. Talant Ryspaev, and Ing. Hans Ulrich Benz, they accomplished the following key tasks:

  • Design of experiments for high-energy ball milling production of nano-sized and micro-sized powders of several experimental material systems for potential application in thermal spray, additive manufacturing, environmental catalysis, and construction industry. The following implementation of the developed experiments has been accomplished using available lab-scale (Simoloyer CM-01) and pilot plant production-scale (Simoloyer CM-08) facilities, varying process parameters (powder mixture composition, milling speed, ball to powder ratio, and milling time).
  • Study of the company's innovations in the fields of nanomaterials production, mechanical milling and mechanical alloying, as well as familiarization with company market strategy, innovation policy, IPR management, and successful business cases for implementing innovative solutions into products during lectures given by Ms. Katharina Zoz.

The processed powders will be characterized at the Central European Institute of Technology (CEITEC BUT), where further microstructural evaluation, performance testing and powder consolidation using thermal spray and additive manufacturing are planned. Moreover, a detailed introduction to the features of high-energy milling equipment and useful operation tricks will allow the best practices to be introduced into the laboratory routine of the High-Performance Materials and Coatings for Industry Group at CEITEC BUT.
